(Access to Coverage of Tobacco Treatment In Our Nation)
Shaping Policies | Improving Health
Dear Partners,
I hope everyone takes some time this holiday season to reflect on the progress our nation has made in tobacco control in 2009. From national tobacco tax increases to smoking bans to the formation of the FDA tobacco regulation division, we’ve made great strides for the health of our states and communities, and we should all be proud of the part we played.
On December 1, Indiana held the first state-specific ACTTION Summit in Indianapolis. Led by Indiana Health Commissioner, Dr. Judy Monroe, and the state’s Executive Director of the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation, Karla Sneegas, the Indiana Cessation Summit brought together 85 state public health leaders to discuss access to tobacco cessation treatment in Indiana. Key partners in attendance included representatives from business, employer, insurer and religious groups, as well as representatives involved in state and local tobacco control coalitions and public health organizations.
Last year, the National Working Group for ACTTION convened a group of leaders from public and private health, business and political sectors to address the issue of access to tobacco cessation in America. Over the past year, there have been significant changes in the tobacco-related field. National and state initiatives have created a strong environment for supporters of the Call for ACTTION to raise their voices on issues related to access and coverage for tobacco cessation treatments and services. ACTTION leaders are excited about what has been accomplished since kicking off this effort just one year ago.
Earlier this year, Partnership for Prevention was awarded a grant from the Pfizer Foundation to help the organization further engage states in promoting the Call for ACTTION recommendations established in November 2008. The goal of the Call for ACTTION is to ensure that every tobacco user has access to comprehensive treatment services by the year 2020. Through this grant, Partnership will create a grant program for states that wish to replicate the National Working Group for ACTTION’s efforts and push forward the recommendations of the Call for ACTTION on a local level.
