(Access to Coverage of Tobacco Treatment In Our Nation)
Shaping Policies | Improving Health
Dear Partners,
In this month’s issue of the ACTTION Update, I would like to emphasize the importance of partnerships. Working alongside organizations and individuals with similar interests and goals can create tremendous opportunities to move forward the recommendations made in the Call for ACTTION. As we work to make comprehensive tobacco cessation treatment available for anyone who wishes to quit smoking, we would love to increase participation in the Call for ACTTION efforts.
Several members of Partnership for Prevention and the National Working Group for ACTTION participated in the National Conference on Tobacco or Health. More than 2,500 attendees – including tobacco control experts, public health leaders, researchers and policymakers – came together to discuss the latest evidence in tobacco control, how to apply current research findings to programming, as well as exchange valuable ideas and tips on how to implement and improve tobacco control activities in the United States. Many organizations saw this conference as an opportunity to discuss the need for more comprehensive cessation treatment services for tobacco users looking to quit.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will hold its 61st Annual Conference at the end of June in New Orleans, La. SHRM – the world’s largest professional association developed to serving the needs of HR professionals – will focus this year on “HR Leadership for the New Economy,” an appropriate title given the state of today’s businesses. The conference will feature the world’s leading business thinkers, and for the first time. Partnership for Prevention will host a session, entitled “The Business Case for Preventive Health Benefit Design: Tobacco Cessation for the Bottom Line” with speakers Dr. Eduardo Sanchez and Diane Flanders.
The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) will focus its annual conference on the theme “HR Leadership for the New Economy.” The conference includes more than 150 concurrent sessions, 26 recertification credits, key legislative updates, and ideas from some of the leading business thinkers in the world. As SHRM is the world’s largest professional association for HR professionals, representing more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, this event is a premier event for business driven organizations and individuals. For the first time, smoking cessation will be a key issue addressed at the conference. For more information about this year’s conference, visit SHRM.
Establishing Smoke-free Policies in Your Community
Don't miss an event that will provide community-based tobacco control practitioners with the skills to implement smoke-free policies and develop state or local smoke-free ordinances. Speakers include: Corinne Husten, Partnership for Prevention; Bronson Frick, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights; Deborah Brown, American Lung Association; Joan Stine and Hellen Dekle of Maryland and South Carolina health departments, respectively; and Rose Marie Matulionis, Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE). The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) hosts 6,000 legislators, staffers, government officials, business representatives, union members, foundation representatives and others interested in public policy. This year's Summit will focus on the economy, including sessions on budgeting, tax policies and the effects of the economic stimulus, as well as innovations in the states and crisis leadership. The three objectives of the meeting are to: improve the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures; promote policy innovation and communication among state legislatures; and ensure state legislatures a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system.
