October 29, 2010 - Partnership for Prevention’s ActionToQuit summit for the New England area was held on October 19 in Framingham, Massachusetts. The event brought together organizational representatives, leaders, and advocates from six states to learn about and discuss tobacco cessation policy strategies. The summit was convened by the American Lung Association, which received a grant from Partnership for Prevention to develop an action plan for tobacco cessation in New England. Read more.
October 27, 2010 - The Center for Disease Control & Prevention warned that states may not be providing enough tobacco-cessation programs for Medicaid enrollees. Only eight states covered all recommended medications and at least one form of counseling for all enrollees (2009), according to researchers at the University of California Berkeley. Read more.
October 18, 2010 - As of August 25, 2010, tobacco and smoking cessation counseling provided by Medicare Part B has been expanded beyond just those with a tobacco-related medical condition. It is now available for all patients wishing to quit tobacco regardless of physical symptoms. To assist family physicians with this change, the American Academy of Family Physicians has created new resources to help them navigate Medicare coding for the services. Read more.
October 8, 2010 - Dr. Simon Chapman, professor of public health at the University of Sydney and leading anti-tobacco researcher, says cessation clinics for habitual smokers in India may not work as well as expected. He argues that while cessation units such as the clinics do lead to a decline in smoking and tobacco consumption, “it happens over a very long period of time.” Read more.
October 8, 2010 - According to an editorial in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Canadian doctors believe that governments should pay for treatments that help people stop smoking. Read more.
October 6, 2010 - A recent statute in the state of Kentucky will grant Medicaid recipients eligibility for cessation counseling and nicotine replacement drugs, if necessary, to help them stop smoking. The 2010-12 state budget provides $3 million for the program, which will be matched with $8.4 million in federal funds. Read more.
October 6, 2010 - Results from a new study in Germany revealed that tobacco smoke residue – also known as “thirdhand smoke” - left on clothes, hair and skin after smoking is extremely dangerous, capable of causing skin and nerve damage – especially in children. Read more.
October 1, 2010 - The Smokefree Women initiative of the National Cancer Institute has launched a new video blog on their Facebook page in an attempt to get real women to talk about their experiences with quitting smoking. This will be a way for women at all stages of their quitting experience, as well as women who have never smoked, to share their ideas and viewpoints while educating the public via social media.
