December 22, 2010 - While the relationship between smoking and cancer is well established, a new study has found that those who continue to smoke after a cancer diagnosis experience greater pain than non-smokers. The study found that current smokers experienced more severe pain than those who had never smoked and former smokers. Read more.
December 22, 2010 -Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal noted this week that a new study—the first of its kind measuring effectiveness of a government-funded smoking cessation for low-income smokers—revealed significant health and cost-saving benefits. This program model is one that Blumenthal had recommended be adopted in Connecticut. Read more.
December 22, 2010 - A study published December 20, 2010 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that motivational interviewing produced only modest improvement for people in treatment for smoking cessation. Read more.
December 17, 2010 - The award-winning “Don’t Be Silent about Smoking” campaign, launched in 2008 by 19 Cessation Centers in New York, is targeting health care providers with its third phase called “Smoking is a Disease.” This movement encourages doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and physician assistants to view smoking as an illness and “Treat It!” Read more.
December 16, 2010 - The National Health Service in the United Kingdom is requiring all smokers awaiting non-life threatening elective surgery to take a 12-week smoking cessation course. The course is one of several measures being taken by managers at the primary care trust to help cut costs. Read more.
December 15, 2010 - Partnership for Prevention is pleased to announce 2011 funds for the current ActionToQuit state grantees. Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New England, New York and Virginia will receive $15,000 for the continuation of efforts made in 2010 to increase access to tobacco cessation treatments through policy and system change. Funds are to be used primarily for the implementation of the state strategic plans developed during the first year of the program. Read more.
December 13, 2010 - A recent study suggests that integrated care, which combines post traumatic stress disorder treatment and smoking cessation, is the best way to help veterans quit smoking. The study which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association followed 943 smokers, who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, while they received treatment. Veterans who received mental health counseling and smoking cessation treatment from the same counselor were twice as likely to quit smoking then those who received mental health counseling and were referred to smoking cessation services. December 10, 2010 - Young people generally start smoking around age 13, with the highest rates of smoking among teens at the age of 18. Read more.
December 10, 2010 - Tuesday December 7th, a U.S. Appeals Court ruled that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no authority to regulate the sale of electronic cigarettes as drugs or devices. The ruling supported a lawsuit, brought by a company that imports and distributes electronic cigarettes, against the FDA after it denied the importation of electronic cigarettes in 2009. Read more.
December 9, 2010 - Research indicates that smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop oral cancers. Tobacco users who use smokeless tobacco may be up to 50 times more likely to develop cancers of the cheek, gums, and lip lining. Read more.
