Brief Smoking Cessation Interventions Conducted in Emergency Rooms Proven to Be Effective

January 21, 2011 - A new study conducted by Polaris Health Directions illustrates the effectiveness of providing multiple brief smoking cessation interventions in the emergency room and other medical settings. The study examined the impact these interventions have on smokers. The study concluded that emergency rooms and other medical settings provide a prime opportunity for health care professionals to identify smokers who are willing to quit smoking and provide them with smoking cessation services. Both patients and health care providers expressed a strong satisfaction with the assessment and referral system since emergency room settings can be the only source of health care for the poor and uninsured.
