The Use of Midwives to Prevent Pregnant Women from Smoking

February 23, 2011 - A new program in West Virginia aims to use midwives to convince women to quit smoking while pregnant. The March of Dimes granted West Virginia University researchers with $13,000 to study the use of comprehensive cessation programs among midwives. The program consists of using  the “5 A’s” and the midwives and providers work together to provide a realistic and holistic approach to smoking cessation among pregnant women. Rates of smoking have nationally dropped among pregnant women, yet West Virginia’s rates increased and continue to remain alarmingly high. Change is needed, and the individuals involved in this program hope that results will be seen soon.
