Shaping Policies | Improving Health
November 10, 2011 While teens may be aware that smoking is harmful to their health, they are also heavily influenced by what they hear from TV shows, movies, and friends and are more likely than adults to believe common myths about smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five teenagers smokes cigarettes and more than 3,000 young people becoming regular smokers every day. Project CONNECT, a tobacco cessation and reduction program developed for adolescents by Caron Treatment Centers, outlined five common misconceptions about tobacco that often prevent teens from successfully quitting: 1) Smoking can help relieve stress 2) “Light smoking” is less dangerous 3) Young people don’t need to worry about the health effects of smoking 4) Social smokers cannot get addicted and 5) Teens can quit smoking on their own. Ensuring that teens are aware of these untruths is key in helping them to achieve their smoking cessation goals.
