(Access to Coverage of Tobacco Treatment In Our Nation)
Shaping Policies | Improving Health
November 8, 2010 - Data from the 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System showed that many smokers in the U.S. also use smokeless tobacco products, such as snuff and chewing tobacco. The trend of multiple tobacco product use is going up, as users try to satisfy their nicotine addiction. Unfortunately, according to a new federal study, combined use of different forms of tobacco makes quitting much more difficult. Among the thirteen states with the highest rates of smoking, seven also had the highest rates of smokeless tobacco use. The state with the highest rate of smokeless tobacco use was Wyoming, at an astounding 23.4 percent for adult males. Men, young adults aged 18 to 24, and people with a high school education or less are most likely to use smokeless tobacco, according to the study. These findings are published in the November 5th issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a publication of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
